Professional Indemnity Insurance protects professionals in given industries from bearing the full cost of defending against claims and charges brought against them by clients and the cost of damages awarded against them in civil lawsuits.
It is also sometimes called Errors and Omissions Insurance. The saying goes that you don’t have to be wrong to be sued, as such many professions either encourage or mandate their members to have some form of indemnity insurance in order to practice in the industry e.g. Kenya Medical Association (KMA)
In some other parts of the world, even landlords are required to have a landlord insurance cover to protect them against any liabilities they may be prone by their position as legal owners of the residential property.
